How to list your products for sale on Amazon

Before selling your merchandise on Amazon FBA, you should prepare and know all the details.

Use the appropriate UPC codes

When introducing new products, make sure you know what universal product codes (UPC) they need. These codes help validate and identify your product globally. According to Amazon, GS1 is the best source of these barcodes if you need them.

Whether the listing is for a single item or a bundle, Amazon requires UPCs for storing and tracking inventory. If you're only reselling a product, you can get help from manufacturers.

Get the product weight and dimensions

Your listing should also include the dimensions and weight. Measure the item's height, width, length, and weight before deciding on the final price.

The same product might already be available on Amazon, depending on your business. If you do, align those details in your description.

Logistics costs are generally lower for smaller items. Using this information, you can forecast and manage storage. There is a great deal of influence on price when it comes to shipping, and mistakes can make or break a deal.

Provide good quality photos

Photos tell a thousand words. So it’s no wonder they can have a huge impact when selling items. After all, you have to tell your audience what they're going to get if you want them to buy your product.

Customers may also find these helpful in answering questions about products. And if they make any purchases, they're more likely to return.

Make your products searchable

Completing your product's online listing is just the first step. All your information will be useless if consumers don’t see your products on search results. So, this might be the most important step overall.

For Amazon SEO, you need to make sure you choose the right category for every product and be sure to decide how you will describe and title your listings. While SEO is a vast subject, basic knowledge is vital in e-commerce.

So start by finding out what can’t be sold on Amazon. The goal is to start a business and generate sales, not engage in customer support emails. Prohibited items include the usual firearms, explosives, alcoholic beverages, jewelry, etc.

Log into your Seller Central Account

Once you have all product details ready, you can start listing them on Amazon. To add a product, click on the Inventory dropdown menu in your Seller Central account. If you are familiar with spreadsheets, you can also choose "Add Products Via Upload."

Choose an option

  • The "Add a Product" page offers three options.
  • Search for a product by name or ID using the search bar.
  • Under the search bar, click "Create a new product listing" (if your product is brand new and not sold on Amazon).
  • You can upload batches of files by going to the right side of the screen and clicking "Bulk Upload."

Confirm the primary category

Depending on the items you're adding, you can add subcategories or additional categories.

Switch to “Advanced View”

In "Advanced View," fill out all the fields under each tab, such as Vital Info, Variations, Offer, Images, Description, Keywords, and More Details. At this point, it’s best to elaborate on any details needed between products. You should also adjust information like legal disclaimers based on your needs.

Your Variations tab is where you distinguish between similar products except for minor differences, such as color or size. Sellers can specify the storefront's products here to decrease ambiguity.

Fill out all the fields in Excel and upload it to Amazon. Download the template from your Dashboard's "Help" tab (search for "inventory file template").
